MINNEAPOLIS — January 24, 2026

A man was fatally shot Friday by federal law enforcement officers during an operation in Minneapolis, according to state and federal officials. The shooting occurred near 26th Street West and Nicollet Avenue in south Minneapolis. Authorities said the officers involved were federal agents with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, including U.S. Border Patrol personnel.

The man who was shot was identified as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, 37, a Minneapolis resident and U.S. citizen, officials said. Pretti was pronounced dead at the scene. Federal officials stated that the operation was part of a broader immigration enforcement action taking place in the Twin Cities area.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Pretti approached agents while armed with a handgun and resisted attempts to disarm him. Agents then fired their weapons. Authorities said a handgun and magazines were recovered at the scene. Officials reported that multiple shots were fired.

Minneapolis police confirmed that local officers responded after the shooting and that the incident involved federal agents, not city police. Police also stated that Pretti had no serious criminal history.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz acknowledged the incident and said state officials were seeking additional information from federal authorities. Following the shooting, the Minnesota National Guard was activated to assist with public safety amid demonstrations near the scene.

The incident marks the latest in a series of federal agent-involved shootings in Minneapolis in January, according to state officials. Investigations into the shooting are ongoing
